Red Cross Learn-to Swim

All of our instructors are certified Red Cross Water Safety Instructors. This means they are not only experts when it comes to teaching and implementing water safety skills, but they are also well trained in implementing a progressive Learn-to-Swim program using 100 years of tried and true methods from the Red Cross. Below are the skills covered in each of the 6 levels of the Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program. Because we are an adaptive swim program, we use this framework of curriculum to adapt our individual lessons to meet each student’s needs. Red Cross: Learn-to-Swim Classes 

Preschool Aquatics: Level 1 Ages 2.5-4yrs

Skills Covered: enter and exit the water using ramp, steps, or side, blow bubbles, submerge mouth, nose, and eyes, open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects, front glide and recover to a vertical position, back glide and recover to a vertical position, back float for 3 seconds, roll from front to back and back to front, arm and hand treading action, alternating and simultaneous leg actions and arm actions on front and back, combined leg and arm actions on front and back.

Preschool Aquatics: Level 2 Ages 2.5-4yrs

Skills Covered: enter water by stepping in from deck or low height, exit water using ladder, steps or side, bobbing, 5 times, open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects, front glide and recover into vertical position, front float for 3 seconds, back glide and recover to a vertical position, back float for 5 seconds, roll from front to back and back to front, tread water using arm and leg actions for 15 seconds, combined arm and leg actions on front, finning arm action on back, combined arm and leg actions on back.

Preschool Aquatics: Level 3 Ages 2.5-4yrs

Skills Covered: Jump in to shoulder-deep water, fully submerge and hold breath, bobbing, 10 times, rotary breathing, front glide and recover to a vertical position, front, jellyfish and tuck floats for 10 seconds, back glide and recover into a vertical position, back float for 15 seconds, change direction of travel while swimming on front and back, tread water for 30 seconds, combined arm and leg actions on front, finning arm action on back, combined arm and leg actions on back

*Level 3 skills are performed independently

Learn-to-Swim Level 1: Beginner

Introduction to Water Skills: Ages 5yrs and up

Skills Covered: enter and exit water, bubbles for 3 seconds, bobbing 5 times, open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects, front glide and back glide recovering into a vertical position, back float for 5 seconds, roll from front to back and back to front, treading water arm and hand actions, alternating and simultaneous leg and arm actions on front and back, combined arm and leg actions on front and back

Learn-to-Swim Level 2: Beginner

Fundamental Aquatic Skills: Ages 5yrs and up

Skills Covered: step or jump into shoulder-deep water, exit water, submerge and hold breath, bobbing 10 times, open eyes under water and retrieve submerged objects, rotary breathing, front, jellyfish, and tuck floats for 10 seconds, front glide and back glide with recover into vertical position, back float for 15 seconds, roll from front to back and back to front, tread water for 15 seconds, change direction of travel while swimming on front and back, combined arm and leg actions on front and back, finning arm action on back

Learn-to-Swim Level 3: Intermediate

Stroke Development: Ages 5yrs and up

Skills Covered: Jump into deep water from the side, submerge and return to the side, headfirst entry from the side in seated and kneeling positions, bobbing while moving to safety, rotary breathing, survival float for 30 seconds, back float for 1 minute, tread water for 1 minute, push off in streamlined position on front then begin kicking, swim the front crawl for 15 yards, swim the elementary back stroke for 15 yards, flutter, scissors, breaststroke, and dolphin kicks

Learn-to-Swim Level 4: Intermediate

Stroke Improvement: Ages 5yrs and up

Skills Covered: Headfirst entry in compact and stride positions, feet first surface dive, swim underwater, tread water using 2 different kicks, survival swimming for 1 minute, front crawl for 25 yards, elementary backstroke for 25 yards, breaststroke for 15 yards, back crawl for 15 yards, butterfly for 15 yards, sidestroke for 15 yards, open turns on the front and back, flutter and dolphin kicks on back, push off in streamlined position on back, then begin kicking

Learn-to-Swim Level 5: Advanced

Stroke Refinement: Ages 5yrs and up

Skills Covered: shallow-angle dive into deep water, tread water for 5 minutes, tread water using legs only for 2 minutes, sculling for 30 seconds, front crawl for 50 yards, elementary backstroke for 50 yards, breaststroke for 25 yards, back crawl for 25 yards, butterfly for 25 yards, sidestroke for 25 yards, front flip turn, backstroke flip turn

Learn-to-Swim Level 6: Advanced

Advanced Options: Ages 5yrs and up

Skills Covered: surface dive and retrieve object from the bottom 7-10 feet deep, front crawl for 100 yards, elementary backstroke for 100 yards, breaststroke from 50 yards, back crawl for 50 yards, butterfly for 50 yards, sidestroke for 50 yards, demonstrate open turns and front and back flip turns when swimming
